The Little Black Box Goes Vegan!

The Little Black Box is vegan this month and they are on sale now! Several members of the Vegan Etsy team contributed to them and our team has also sponsored this month's box. You can order yours here. Hurry, because they won't last long!

Please help Sophie!

Nicole of Late July wrote the following.

A pound in Ohio, that the rescue I volunteer for rescues from has an amazing story. As you know in places like Ohio, the pounds are just booming with dogs, being abandoned, surrendered etc.

Sophie was lucky and was adopted (she's a real mutt) but when the family went to get her spayed they found out she has a massive heart condition. They took her back to the pound and paid for her to be euthanized. The staff, against what most shelters would do, decided that they would really try to raise the money for her surgery. Its $3000 for the surgery which is a lot! but she's so loving, outgoing and has wagged her little tail off just to stay alive!

If you can help, by donating money or items. her chip in and photos are here:

My store is closed right now as I work on things but if anyone has anything they can donate to raise money or if you can please post her chip in on the blog that would be great. the official email is below!

Thanks for listening everyone!

Warm up the winter with HOT Salsa!

I could eat buckets of this when we make it. It's on the spicy side, so feel free to tame it down if that's not your style. We wear latex gloves when we cut hot peppers up, which I highly recommend.

2 diced habanera peppers
2 diced red fresno peppers (i.e. red jalapenos)
2 diced jalapeno peppers
1/2 diced yellow onion
1 Tablespoon crushed garlic
1 16 oz. can diced tomatoes (green pepper & onion kind is best)
1 16 oz. can crushed tomatoes
1 can black beans, drained & rinsed (optional)
1 can corn, drained (optional)
olive oil

Coat a pan with olive oil. Add everything except the garlic and tomatoes. Saute on low heat for 10 minutes. Add the garlic and tomatoes and cook until the salsa reaches the desired thickness (about 15 to 20 minutes). It will be a bit soupy when hot, but it thickens up a bit. Cool overnight and stir before serving.

The Banned Aid Coalition

Becca of Healing Heart asked me to post the following.

Is your dog worth a dollar?

The constitutional challenge to represent the collective, national interest of responsible dog owners, is in dire straits.

We are $67,000 short of being able to get our voices heard in Canada's highest court, the Supreme Court. We have been granted an extension to come up with this amount, but just till the end of January 2009.

The Banned Aid Coalition, including the SBTCC and the DLCC, is begging everyone to meet the $1/dog challenge.

Please, if you can, just one loonie for every dog in your house right now. There are thousands of them out there. Please forward to anyone who owns a dog. Just one dollar - that's all...

PAY PAL. Please go to and click onthe "Donate!" link for the Pay Pal tool.

New Shops

Two current members also opened up new shops this week. Melanie of The Coma Girl Designs has opened Doolang Doolang Boutique, which features jewelry made from upcycled vintage brooches, necklaces, earrings and chandelier crystals.

Also, Michelle of Sticks In Stones has opened ReBrand, the team's first store that specializes in graphics for your shop! She is giving 10% off to all Vegan Etsy members, so if your shop is in need of a makeover, she's the woman to contact! If you'd like to see some of the fabulous work she's done, take a look at my shop. She did my banner, cookbook cover and avatar for me. I love them all!

Congratulations to Melanie and Michelle!

Recipe- Portabella Pasta

The following recipe was submitted by Heather of Holistically Heather, For The Love Of Vegan and Recycled Cycle.

Tonight we are making a home favorite, that is super simple!

What you will need:
2 portabella mushrooms, diced
2 small or 1 medium onion diced
4-8 cloves of garlic diced (depends on your personal taste, my taste is for garlic)
seasame oil
sesame seeds (optional yet delicious)
basil and oregano (its winter so dried will have to do)
braggs liquid aminos or soy sauce
1 Lb of pasta, we like gluten free pasta, but do whatcha want
1/8 to 1/4 c. nutritional yeast (gives it a cheesey nutty type flavor that we love)Photobucket

Super simple, here we go....
Start a pot of water to boil for the pasta, boil pasta til its done, you know the deal!
Saute the mushrooms, garlic and onion and braggs in a couple Tablespoons of sesame oil, until the onions and garlic are translucent and the mushrooms are a nice chewy texture. Strain the pasta, and put into a big bowl, we like wooden bowls.....I dont know why but Ive always loved wooden bowls, spoons etc... mix the pasta, mushrooms garlic onion combo, some more sesame oil, sesame seeds, basil and oregano, nutritional yeast and salt and pepper to taste.
Now, wasnt that easy? Its such a quick delicious meal!!!!

And here is a random shot of penney coming to check out whats for dinner!
