Meet The Team - Aletha

~*~ Meet The Team ~*~

 Aletha of Radical Fringe X
Hi my name is Aletha and I'm a vegan graphic designer & fiber artist.
I started crocheting about the same time as I went vegetarian 8 years ago
(vegan 2 years later) and so I don't use any animal fibers! I love crochet
because it is so fluid and 3-dimensional, my creativity is unlimited with
yarn & hook! Some of the proceeds from my etsy shop go to pay for my
rescue cat's emergency vet assistance; on the side another crocheter & I
run Urban Fiber Operative , a Detroit-based collective of fiber artists
 encouraging public displays of yarn.

You can find Aletha and her fantastic items at:

Vegan Polenta Pizza

Well it isn't exactly like regular pizza but it is sooo yum and super easy to make too. I only have access to a microwave right now so I baked this pizza in it but once I get back home I'm definitely going to try this out in a real oven.

Polenta Pizza close upCrust:
1 C polenta corn grits
Olive Oil
Salt
2 C water

Bring the water to boil. Add salt and a dash of olive oil. Slowly add the corn grits while stirring continuously with a fork. Reduce the heat and keep stirring until all the water is absorbed. Close the pan and let it sit.

Topping (you can use any combination of veggies of course but here's mine):
Tomatoes sliced into circles
Onions sliced thin and long
Rice Vegan Cheese Slices cut into little pieces

Marinade:
Tamari
Ground Black Pepper
Sugar or Agave (teeny bit)
Tabasco Chilli Sauce

Mix the marinade ingredients together in a bowl. Place the chopped onions in the marinade and toss well. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes.

Oil your pizza tray (I directly used my glass microwave turn table) and transfer the polenta onto it. Dip your palm in a generous amount of olive oil and pat the polenta down into an even base. Bake on high power for 5 minutes.

Take the onion slices out of the marinade and spread them evenly over the base. Place the sliced tomatoes over this and top with the rice vegan cheese pieces.

Bake on medium power for 5 minutes and then on high for 2 more minutes.

Slice and serve hot. Enjoy! :)

Twig and Leaf Botanicals - an amazing Vegan Etsy Team shop.

Twig & Leaf is a small, couple owned and operated business in Boulder, Colorado. They use only vegan ingredients and organically grown or wildcrafted plant materials in all of their products. Their products are made from natural, organic plant material, without any chemical additives. All of their packaging is RECYCLED! Their glass jars are thick recycled glass.

A wonderful shop selling a huge variety of natural herbs and potions, that will not only be good for your body and skin but fill your senses with joy. How about a home spa treatment or a coconut body scrub? Something for every skin type. Want to know more about this wonderful shop? then read on...

When Kelly was young, her mom thought she would be a chemist - but she is lousy at math - and her dad thought she would be a park ranger. I suppose she did an unexpectedly splendid job of blending the two together. Kelly has always been passionate about plants and their properties. Somewhere along the line a few years ago, she decided this is what she wants to do with her life, despite having gone to 3 colleges and changed degrees from photography, to creative writing, to elementary education and traveling and living all across the United States. She is working on her Clinical Herbalism degree, and he is working in economics.

Kelly and Scott are both 24 years old and currently reside in Boulder, Colorado with their rescue cat - kitty face. They live in a small, beautiful cabin nestled at the foot of the Flatiron Mountains, surrounded by plum trees and ivy. What’s not to love? Kelly has been vegan since she was 6 years old, which started out as a health issue and evolved into a conscious decision. Scott has been vegan for over two years now.

When Kelly started the business, she was just making bulk organic herbal teas, each with different health benefits, and selling them to a café in Boulder. They are still doing that, but she decided that enough is enough with having to rely on other shady businesses for every day products. What are those ingredients? Why are they in there? What do they do? She developed her own lip balms and lotions with simple, organic ingredients, with no animal products, and wanted to share them with everyone.

So came about twig & leaf botanicals. They use only organic butters, oils, and plant materials, and strive to use organic locally grown plants when we can. They believe that everyone should have access to simple, natural, and healthy products with an affordable price. They also use ALL recycled paper and glass packaging, and no plastics, because plastics contain harmful chemicals that can leak into your products - and we’re pretty sure no one wants to rub that into their skin.

Check out their Etsy Shop and browse the wonderful products, and for interesting information and lovely photos, hop on over to their wonderfully inspiring and fabulous blog.

World Veg Day ~ with the EtsyVeg team!

Veggies Unite! Announcing a collaboration of the Vegan Etsy and EtsyVeg teams… the World Vegetarian Day Project! The two teams will unite to celebrate World Vegetarian Day on October 1st, World Farm Animals Day on October 2nd, and World Vegetarian Month in October, working to spread public awareness about vegan and vegetarian lifestyles. The 5-day event, September 28th-October 2nd, will involve promotion of the animal, people, and planet-friendly choice to go veg, why it’s important, how to go about it, and how easy it is by sharing recipes, articles, and resources with the public! During the week of the event, members of both teams are invited to share knowledge and passion about, as well as commitment to living veg by posting information like essays, recipes, and resources. There are different levels of participation so many can find a way to play along.

Ways you can participate:

1) Let us know that you’d like to participate by emailing etsyveg [!at] gmail.com by September 25th so we can promote your recipes/articles/special events. From September 28th through October 2nd, daily blog posts will link to recipes and articles by participants.

2) Post an original vegetarian or vegan recipe of your choice on your blog or website, or in your Etsy shop announcement on World Veg Day, October 1st. Those who would rather not post on their own may submit their recipe to the EtsyVeg or Vegan Etsy blogs. These recipes will then be gathered into an ebook (help needed with this) and made available to the public in following weeks for a small fee to raise money for charity (a vote will be taken to decide which one).

Recipes must be emailed (both link and html code) to etsyveg [!at] gmail.com by the end of the day October 2nd to be included in the ebook. Please include your shop banner or other shop graphic, along with a link to/description of your favorite veg/animal cause.

3) Write and post an article about any aspect about going veg to spread the word about how easy it is and its benefits to the health and well-being of people, animals, and/or the planet. And don’t forget about touting the pluses of supporting handmade and vegan/vegetarian artisans! Those who would rather not post on their own may submit their piece to the EtsyVeg or Vegan Etsy blogs. Or compile a list of links to your go-to online veg resources. These can also be added to the ebook.

Articles must be emailed (both link and html code) to etsyveg [!at] gmail.com by the end of the day October 2nd to be included in the ebook. Please include your shop banner or other shop graphic, along with a link to/description of your favorite veg/animal cause.

4) Promote! Even if not participating in one of the above, join the fun by helping to promote the event and its mission. Talk up the event and related recipes/articles/info on your social media sites, or submit info about it to other sites. Email friends and family about the event and pass on info about going veg to anyone you think may be interested. Help to promote the ebook and raise funds for charity!

5) Participants can use a special avatar that will be (help needed with graphics!) designed for the event in their Etsy shop, and may also use an event graphic or banner on their blog, site, or social media pages. Everyone is encouraged to use the avatar from September 28th- October 2nd, but please feel free to use all graphics, once released, at anytime leading up to the event and during ebook promotion.

6) Along with participants we are in need of volunteers to help make this project go smoothly! Help is needed in the following areas:

• Create participant list for each team.

• Maintain status checklist, tracking emails with required info, etc. for each participant.

• Post challenge updates/photos/promotion on the EtsyVeg blog and Vegan Etsy blog at regular intervals.

• Promote the contest on various social media, especially once voting begins.

• Start/maintain an Etsy forum thread for the contest, including prompting
members/participants to post updates and feedback there.

• Create a special blog graphic/avatar/banner.

• Someone to create the ebook (or give guidance in how to do so).

If I'm missing any tasks here, please let me know and we can add them. Or suggest your own ideas of a way you'd like to help. :D

This should be really fun- we hope you’ll join us in sharing your own perspective on such an important and far-reaching decision and lifestyle! :D For you, the planet, the animals, and all living beings.

"Humane" Farming- an Oxymoron

The following is from Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary's website, Go Vegan Now! .

"Humane" Farming - an Oxymoron

Look out! Here it comes! You may have already seen them... Soon grocery store shelves everywhere will be covered with an array of "Humanely produced" eggs, dairy, and meat.

Sadly, there is no such thing. The animal exploiting industries and retailers think they have struck gold with this new deceptive advertising and labeling strategy. Sadly they are deceiving consumers who consider themselves “animal lovers”. Most people want to believe that there is a “humane” way to produce animal products, but the truth is that is impossible – basic economics and biology are the two most irrefutable reasons why.

Basic Economics
For any product to be mass produced whether it’s labeled “organic, Free Range, Cage Free, etc. The animals are still bred by the billions, separated from their family members, and eventually loaded into trucks and are brutally slaughtered including all Dairy cows and hens. Free-range & Organic animal products are highly profitable because they can charge a lot more for the 'product', and consumers are willing to pay that price in order to fell guilt free without eliminating the animal products. This allows the animal exploiters to put even more money back into advertising which increases sales which ultimately increases the number of animals bred, abused, and killed.

Basic Biology
Cows still must be impregnated, their babies are still stolen from them and either slaughtered or kept separately to REPLACE their spent and slaughtered mothers.

For any and all types of egg production, including backyard operations, ALL baby roosters are still killed at the hatcheries, the hens are often still de-beaked, force molted and slaughtered at 1 •to 4 years old when their battered and overworked bodies can no-longer lay enough eggs to be “economically productive”.

The pigs, chickens, and cattle killed for their flesh are still taken from their mothers, still forced to endure a terrifying trip to the slaughterhouse and, of course, violently murdered.

These meats, eggs and dairy products are the bodies and bodily secretions of sentient beings who are enslaved and killed. If it were dogs or cats forced to endure the same circumstances to satisfy people's appetites, there is no way the public would believe these products could be promoted or labeled as “humane”.

Please don’t be fooled by the deceptive and manipulative marketing ploys of the bloody handed producers. The blood of the animals is not only on the hands of the producers, but also on the hands of the consumers who pay them to abuse, kill and neatly package the body parts.

The fact that each and every one of us has full and immediate access to the most effective way of reducing the greatest amount of suffering in the world is cause for celebration.

Choosing vegan products has never been easier and has always been the only truly humane and compassionate choice.
