Meet The Team - Aletha

~*~ Meet The Team ~*~

 Aletha of Radical Fringe X
Hi my name is Aletha and I'm a vegan graphic designer & fiber artist.
I started crocheting about the same time as I went vegetarian 8 years ago
(vegan 2 years later) and so I don't use any animal fibers! I love crochet
because it is so fluid and 3-dimensional, my creativity is unlimited with
yarn & hook! Some of the proceeds from my etsy shop go to pay for my
rescue cat's emergency vet assistance; on the side another crocheter & I
run Urban Fiber Operative , a Detroit-based collective of fiber artists
 encouraging public displays of yarn.

A Giving Heart: Neva
A Special Valentine's Artist Story and Giveaway!

Meet Neva - longtime Vegan Etsy Team member, artist, and devoted animal advocate. First, read her moving story. Then, find out how to WIN an adorable prize pack of items from her shop!

Words from the artist:
I've long been active in animal rights, veganism, and animal rescue. I've also been painting, drawing, sewing and creating all kinds of crafts for as long as I can remember. I like to make items celebrating the beauty of nature and animals. I now have two Etsy shops: my original shop, Neva Jewelry and Design, and my second shop, a side project for tiny plush cats called Camp Kittens.

My latest rescue efforts have centered around stray, feral, and abandoned cats in my neighborhood. My husband Sean and I moved into this neighborhood and soon discovered that approximately 60 cats were living on the grounds of the local elementary school, and new colonies were spreading out around the neighborhood as the cats got too crowded. Many neighbors didn't like the cats, and our first involvement was finding some of the cats dying from being poisoned - we rushed them to the emergency vet though it was too late to save them.

We have now spayed/neutered and vaccinated approximately 45 cats and returned to them to the neighborhood. We've received help from some neighbors, so now the cats live in various yards and shelters with a much more manageable number living at the school. We've removed and found homes for about 22 cats who were tame or were kittens. Unfortunately, a few cats were extremely ill and had to be euthanized.

One thing I found through doing a TNR (trap, neuter, return) program on this scale was that some people weren't supportive because they didn't understand its goals. So when I explained to these neighbors that if I was successful, then 1) no new kittens would be born into the colony, 2) the number of cats would immediately decrease as I sought homes for tame cats and kittens, and 3) all remaining cats would be vaccinated against disease, people became very open to the effort. I still sometimes have neighbors stop and thank me as they drive by while I'm walking my dogs.

When we initially began this project, I went out every single day to feed the cats at the school as well as another few cats who made their home bases elsewhere. Now more neighbors have taken on feeding cats, and there are just fewer cats around. Four of the once feral cats, Deedee, Leelee, Pookie, and Apollo, now live inside with us. Deedee was hit by a car and severely injured, and had to stay inside during her long recovery. She was deeply bonded to her mother, Leelee, so I brought her inside to keep Deedee company. Pookie is older and is now deeply attached to our dogs. In addition, after Apollo was adopted but returned to us for misbehavior, he also stayed in our home. He has a great deal of energy and really needs to be with our two boys Liam and Obi so he can get the rough play out of his system every day.

One of my main goals for my Etsy shops is to help finance my rescue efforts, but I also hope to raise money for donations to some of my favorite charities. For example, I did a pre-Christmas fundraiser for Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary. Because I work full time and have an autoimmune disease, I don't always get as many things listed in my Etsy shops as I might like to. But creative work is also my therapy in a way. It's something joyful and fulfilling when sometimes rescues don't go as I planned and the evening news is full of sorrow.

I've been vegan for about 16 years now, after having been vegetarian since high school. I love being vegan, I love to cook, and I love to eat (a little too much). Being vegan is the ideal diet for my autoimmune condition as animal fats and the hormones in animal products fuel inflammation. However, the real reason I'm vegan is because of my love for animals. I can't love them as much as I do and wear pieces of them or eat them. I've never once regretted the decision to be vegan, though even so sometimes knowing the kind of pain animals go through can be heart-wrenching.

I grew up in a family that essentially ate a big slab of meat, an over-cooked vegetable and some kind of starch at every meal. When I look at the colorful rainbows of vegetables I eat now, and the different cuisines I've tried from all over the world, and as I appreciate the subtle flavors of fresh herbs and spices, I can't imagine why anyone would find a vegan diet limiting. Being vegan has expanded my palate and made me appreciate a much greater variety of flavors and textures.
And now, for the giveaway! In order to enter, you must do ALL of the following:
  • mark one or both of Neva's shops as a "favorite" on Etsy
  • follow this blog
  • leave a comment telling us why you like Neva's story and art, and how you've entered!
What you'll win:
  • A prize pack including a postcard and a magnet featuring Neva'a art, a one-of-a-kind handmade pin crafted by Neva, AND a few little goodies from the Vegan Etsy Team!
Entry Deadline:
  • Entries must be made by February 28, 2011. One lucky winner will be announced in the beginning of March!
Good luck to all, and Happy Valentine's Day!

Member of the Week: Allison of Monkeys Always Look!

Today we meet Allison of Monkeys Always Look. She is one of those lucky sellers who has managed to make Etsy her full time job, with items so popular that she was once even one of Etsy's featured sellers. So what does she do that's so fantastic? She made her mark with little succulent plants potted in interesting vintage containers, and has now shifted her focus to antique-ish silverware stamped as garden markers, 'I heart Mom', 'you are my sunshine', or whatever you can dream up (yes, she does them custom!). Pretty great? As Allison might say, supergreat.

When did you open your Etsy shop?
I opened my shop almost two years after I told my boss to suck it and I have been doing this full-time ever since.

What kinds of items do you sell in your shop, and what inspired you to start creating them?
I have a couple different things in my shop. I sell potted succulents, candles, a little bit of jewelry and a lot of stamped silverware. The inspiration to start creating was the desire to eat, pay the bills and stick it to the man.

Do you donate through your shop to any charities or do any volunteer work?
While I don’t donate based on shop sales my husband and I donate to animal charities as well as human ones. I try to do volunteer work when I can and we have fostered a few wayward pups along the way.

What are some of your favorite things about Etsy?
There are so many talented people and it is so fun to see what people create. I have made some awesome life-long friends though etsy and will be forever thankful for that.

Do you sell your items outside of Etsy, either online or in retail shops?
I do sell outside of etsy. I have my own site and I have been super duper fortunate to have a number of retailers sell my line, most notably Anthropologie, Green Depot and coming very soon my new line of jewelry at Herbivore in Portland, OR!

Have you been featured anywhere?
I have been very lucky to have some wonderful features! I think the biggest boosts were my garden markers in Country Living Magazine and Design*Sponge.

How long have you been vegan, and what made you go vegan?
I have been vegan for almost 3 years and was vegetarian for about 18 years beforethat. I had been thinking about it for a while and after reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma it finally hit me: dairy cows live a horrible, pain filled life and even though they don’t die to feed me, they suffer so much. I don’t know why it took so long for it to dawn on me and I’m embarrassed that it did. But I’m here now, so better late then never.

Do you have any favorite foods?
Yes, it’s called FOOD. My husband is an awesome cook and the family chef so whatever he makes I love, especially when it comes from our HUGE veggie garden he tends to every day. He rules!

Do you have any animal companions?
Boy do we! Weston the Cat is our 17lb monster who was found running around in Central Park. Mr. Vivian, our 25lb sulcatta tortoise, roams our backyard and keeps the grass mowed. And lastly there's our 3 rescued Great Danes. There’s Marley who we have had for 4 years and holds a Master’s Degree in Human Manipulation; Oliver, a deaf love bug that likes ice cubes, peanut butter and taking dishes out of the sink to lick them clean; and Toby, our failed foster who is teaching Oliver very bad habits, like taking dishes out of the sink and jumping on the kitchen table to feed at the cat food buffet.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have?
I love taking the dogs to the beach a few times a week and I find that so relaxing and enjoyable. I try to exercise and pretend to like it. And I love to bake something that contains lots of sugar and then eat it all in one sitting.

What is the vegan community like in your area?
Honestly I have no idea, I don’t get out much. There are a few restaurants that we go to time and time again and there is an awesome vegan store here called All Vegan that I shop at on occasion. But beyond that it is just me in my little vegan world.

Do you have any future plans for your shop?
I do! I’m launching a new line of jewelry in about a month that I’m very excited about.

Is there anything else you would like to add or share?
I have been extremely lucky to be able earn a living making and selling my little items. While I work very long hours and truly never get a break or vacation (thanks to my iPhone) I LOVE IT and wouldn’t trade it for anything. I get a lot of people asking me how I do it or how can they do it to. I’m happy to answer anyone who has questions about going “full-time” and sticking it to the man, so please feel free to contact me. Also, to the team mates: while you might not see me post a lot in the vegan team forum, I always read all the posts and feel like I know most of you, so come on over and say hi!

VET Member of the Week: Monkey & Squirrel!

This week we are excited to present Jenn of Monkey & Squirrel! This is definitely the gal you want to have with you at a rummage sale - she has a gift for making something old new again. But of course she also has a talent for creating simple yet beautiful objects from unexpected materials. Now, a window into her art and craft...

When did you open your Etsy shop, and how did you choose its name?
i can't believe i've now been open one year and two months! it's gone so quickly and i'm loving every minute of it! i named my shop, Monkey & Squirrel, after two of my fabulous little kitties. they're so proud!

What kinds of items do you sell in your shop, and what inspired you to start creating them?
i've got a bit of variety going on in my shop. cast iron wall hooks, hand sewn wall decor, brooches, headbands... i like to think of Monkey & Squirrel as a little gift shop where you can find something for just about anyone!

Do you donate through your shop to any charities or do any volunteer work?
i certainly do! a percentage of my profits go to North Mecklenburg Animal Rescue. it's a wonderful dog rescue that i work with here in NC.

What are some of your favorite things about Etsy?
oh so many! i love the pounce feature, i love reading every single blog article, i love the treasuries, and i especially love the feeling of community here on etsy. in so many ways it's made the world feel a lot smaller. gotta love that!

Do you sell your items outside of Etsy, either online or in retail shops?
i do have a few retail shops that carry my goodies. you can now find Monkey & Squirrel in colorado, brooklyn, atlanta, chicago, and even canada!

Have you been featured anywhere?
i've been so very lucky to be featured on some fabulous blogs. i know for a fact that my shop wouldn't be nearly as successful without the blogging community, and for that i can never thank them enough!

How long have you been vegan, and what made you go vegan?
i have been vegan for 5 years now. i was vegetarian for 8 years before going vegan and it just felt like a really natural progression. once i realized that the dairy industry was just as evil, if not more so then the beef industry, it was really not a hard decision at all. i love being vegan! i know that it's something great i'm doing for animal rights, for my body, and for the environment.

What are your favorite foods?
right now i'm obsessed with raw zucchini pasta. i could eat if for every meal! i'm also a huge fan of falafel. i always say that if i had to chose one food to live of off for the rest of my life, it would be falafel!

Do you have any favorite vegan things, like books, websites, stores, etc.?
i love what the vaute couture line is doing for vegan fashion. it's getting a lot of attention in the fashion world, and that can only do more to spread the word about veganism. that and their winter coats are amazing! any vegan who has ever lived in a seriously chilly town knows about the lack of warm, cute vegan winter coats.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have?
bike rides, yoga, game nights with friends... these are high on my list of interests!

Do you have any animal companions?
of course! i have three cats (monkey, squirrel, and juan) and one dog (barkley). they certainly keep life interesting!

What is the vegan community like in your area?
charlotte, nc is actually lacking somewhat in the vegan department. we just got our first 100% vegan restaurant (thank you zizi's!), and i'm hoping more aren't far behind. don't get me wrong, there are some wonderful options here. i just wouldn't call charlotte a must visit place on a vegan food tour. if you are vegan and you find yourself here, these are some of my must haves: buffalo chicken sandwich from zizi's, zucchini bread from central coffee, crystal veg roll from pisces, tofu & tater salad at the flying biscuit, and any of the tofu dishes at lang van. my personal favorite right now is the lemongrass tofu... delicious!

Do you have any future plans for your shop?
definitely! i would really like to fine tune everything. i would love to create specific collections, either by season, or by theme. this way people who wanted to decorate their home in a specific style, could find it really easy to shop by collections. that's just one of the many many plans in the works for Monkey & Squirrel's future.

Is there anything else you would like to add or share?
a big thanks to the VET team. you guys are all so supportive and i couldn't be prouder to call myself a member! oh and... GO VEGAN!

VET Member(s) of the Week:
kelly beth and scott of twig & leaf botanicals

hello! we are kelly beth & scott of twig & leaf botanicals, and we are slightly opposed to capital letters. (at least kelly is, and she’s typing up this interview.) scott’s the structured, mathematical one; he does our accounting and keeping track of invoices and whatnot, and keeps kelly motivated. we have lived together longer than we have been dating, and can’t wait to travel the world together. scott is currently finishing up his economics/business degree, and kelly is in college limbo. she has done 5 years of school, with 3 years off between to travel, but still has no clue what she should get a degree in at a university. what she really wants to do, she is currently doing. however, outside of university, her degree in botanical/herbal medicine is on the horizon.

When did you open your Etsy shop, and how did you choose its name?

etsy says we opened in october of ’09, but we didn’t actively start using etsy until march of this year. kelly has been creating herbal tea blends for about 4 years now, and has been selling them to a local coffee shop/bookstore here in Boulder for over 2 years.

we chose the name “twig & leaf botanicals” after months and months of combining two words together and seeing how it felt to say. twig & leaf happens to also be the name of a greasy Louisville, Kentucky diner where kelly lived for 6 years. maybe an homage to one of my favorite cities, maybe it just felt good to say. we’re okay with both.

What kinds of items do you sell in your shop, and what inspired you to start creating them?

when I was little, my mother thought I would become a chemist or doctor, and my dad thought I would be a park ranger. I have always been interested in plants and their properties, and going on tours at the natural history museum, and trying to make people feel better.

this evolved into wanting to take my interest in plants and mesh that with natural health & well-being, with knowledge that many people rely heavily on chemicals to clean their home, things they can’t pronounce rubbed into their skin, and the cheapest possible option as a way of living. I wanted to give everyone access to affordable, vegan, natural options for their bodies, home, and overall daily lifestyle.

Describe the process of your work, from inspiration to completion:

making something new is all trial and error. a lot of error, much a trial. but making things, making a mess, and cleaning it all to mess it up again is pretty much my favorite thing to do. today I am making toothpaste. this will involve telling my blender everything will be okay, and scott and I brushing our teeth about 16 times before we go to bed tonight. you should have seen us trying my mud masks. hilarious. twig & leaf is my way of making a living. we’re pretty humble, and live in a small cabin at the foot of the mountains, and going to work means playing music and dancing around the kitchen for a good 6 hours, and spending another 4 hours in front of a computer. I love my job.

Why do you think it's important to buy handmade?

I have always known, not just for the economy, but for the sake of craft, that one should always buy local when possible, and always handmade. with etsy came a whole community of artists, all loving what they do, and trying to make an honest living from it, while supporting other artists. we will support (almost) anyone who’s honest and puts time, love, and knowledge into their craft.

Do you donate through your shop to any charities or do any volunteer work?

I volunteer at a local organic farm, Oxford Gardens, and we are members of the equal rights campaign, as well as the Appalachian Trail. I did volunteer at the Nederland, Colorado Mountain People’s Co-op, but don’t have the time right now to continue doing so.

Do you sell your items outside of Etsy, either online or in retail shops?

we sell 6 of our herbal tea blends at the Trident Booksellers and Café in Boulder, Colorado, and are working on getting soaps in at Lolita’s Market, as well as working on our connections throughout the United States. it’s quite the process.

How long have you been vegan, and what made you go vegan?

I have been vegan since I was 6 years old, because of health reasons, which turned into a conscious decision. scott has been vegan for 2 years now, for health and conscious reasons as well. I showed him Baraka with the baby chicks scene, before we started dating, and that tugged at his heartstrings.

What are your favorite foods?

kelly’s favorite food ever is beets! beets steamed with brown sugar, beets doused in vinegar, or just taking a good tough bite from a beet out of the garden. scott’s favorite food is anything potato. anything. oh! and guacamole. yumm

Do you have any favorite vegan things, like books, websites, stores, etc.?

we dig our Tom’s vegan stitch-outs, and we love that they donate a pair of shoes to a child in need for each pair you purchase. some of them do have leather inserts though, so always go for the vegan option! we also love to cook together. some of our favorite cookbooks are Clean Food by Terry Walters and Raw by Charlie Trotter & Roxanne Klein.. we also like the moosewood cookbooks, but they are vegetarian, not vegan, so you have to modify some recipes. all cookbooks are for ideas, really. cooking is another creative outlet for us.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have?

kelly loves being a kitchen witch, dancing, disappearing into the woods, reading, playing violin, and gardening, wandering around every day snapping pictures with her Diana, fisheye, and Nikon, and cannot wait for the Polaroid film to start being made again (!!!). scott likes to play guitar, be logical (he once described a french fry using algebra), read the economist, play soccer, smile and have a light heart. our days are filled with music.

Do you have any animal companions?

we have 1 rescue cat - her name is “kitty face”. she was abused for many years, and is quite the talker. she’ll yell at you for passing her, then yell at you again for not stopping to pet her, then yell at you for touching her. she means well, and is usually purring through all the yelling. kitty face is 10 years old and tiny, tiny, tiny. we love her like our child.

Do you have any future plans for your shop?

i do! we are working on getting shampoos, conditioners, and 16oz glass bottles of soap nut concentrate up in the shop instead of 8ounce glass bottles, along with baby powders, hair pomade, and other vegan health & beauty goodies (including moustache wax!). we are bummed that our soap nuts are taking so long to arrive, and don’t currently have them listed in our shop, but they will be again soon!

with that, we have to water the garden before the sun comes out. thank you so much for the interview, for recognizing us, and for actually reading through it.

Much love-

Kelly Beth & Scott

VET Member of the Week: Heather of Heathrock!

Hi! My name is Heather and I'm the "creator" of heathrock designs. Originally I'm from NJ (and will always be a Jersey girl at heart!), but have been living in Maryland for almost 5 years now. I was so shocked and thrilled that the "other" Heather from 3 AM Art Productions chose me for the next VET Member of the Week. I have enjoyed meeting all of my new vegan, creative friends and hope to continue this ongoing friendship and learning from each and every one of you. OK, I could keep rambling on and on, but then I would ruin the entire interview! So without further ado, I hope you guys enjoy the read! :)

How long have you been vegan, and what made you go vegan?

Since I'm in LOVE with my new lifestyle, I keep thinking I have been vegan forever. In reality, I have only been vegan for 6 months 28 days 22 hours and 25 minutes - ha ha... I know this because I became vegan when I bought Alicia Silverstone's book, The Kind Diet and joined her website, The Kind Life (and they tell you how long you have been a member on that site - I promise I'm not psycho!). So to make a long story shorter... first I started eating organic foods, then I became pescetarian (seafood only- pretty much a macrobiotic diet) then I went all out and just committed myself to my vegan life.

Do you have any animal companions?

Yes and I would have a boat load more if I could! Before I was smart enough to rescue, I found my American Bulldog, Socrates, while scanning the classified ads. He was being "sold" by a private owner whose pets just happened to have a litter. I fell in love with him instantly and forked over the cash. I talked them down to $400 but I would give up my life for him now. Our other addition is our little rescue kitty, Gaia. We have only had her for about 6 months but she has been a part of our family since we first laid eyes on her. She is a complete terror and is overly obsessed with Socrates. And we love every minute of it. :)

When did you open your Etsy shop, and how did you choose its name?

I opened my etsy shop in January of this year. And I chose the name "heathrock designs" because well, my nick name growing up was heathrock so I decided that it was appropriate. Plus it's kinda fun and easy to remember...isn't it?!

Why do you think it's important to buy handmade?

It's important to buy handmade because you're supporting a local business. Even if it's not your local community, it's still being handmade somewhere in the world. And on Etsy, it's a safe bet that it's a fair trade product so you don't have to worry about troublesome situations. Handmade is the only way because you feel and see the love in each creation. And that's something to be proud of.

When did you learn your craft, and how did you become interested in it?

I have always been creative whether it was art or writing or just by having a vivid imagination. I have only recently thought to sell my art and it's only due to the stupid economy. I am in love with all of my pieces so it's kinda hard to part with them, but my hope is that I give that love to whoever buys my art. Kinda like a pay it forward for love. :)

Briefly describe the process of your work, from idea to finished artwork:

Once I have the inspiration and drive, the process is pretty quick. I don't care about the mess... if I'm in a zone, I just go for it!

Do you have anything new you plan on adding to your store?

I'm going to continue making art until my dying day. During the summer, I work crazy hours, so I probably won't have too many new items... but the fall and winter are completely different stories. :) I constantly have *creative* ideas running through my head, so you never know what to expect!

What can we expect next for Heathrock?

I'm really trying to sell more (regardless of how much I want to keep all of my art!) so I guess I'll be handing out business cards and trying to promote my work as much as I can. And until I can sell on a regular basis, I guess I'll just have to be a starving artist with a passion. :)

Anything else you would like us to know?

Being that I'm a vegan, eco, animal activist, 10% of my sales will be donated to animal charities. If you have any questions regarding this, shoot me an email! You can also check out my blog, twitter feed, and facebook page. :)

Vegan Etsy Team Member of the Week: Heather of 3am Art Productions!

Meet Heather Henry, artist and creator, the mind and eye behind 3am Art. Today she provides us with a little background on the stunning images and other fascinations available in her shop...

Hi, I'm Heather from 3 Am Art Productions. I'm one of those people who chose a user name on Etsy, but didn't use my store name as the user name. Whoops! So my shop is found under aktie9. Also pretty much anywhere on the web, if you wanna find me.. just type in aktie9, and BOO there I am! Although I did make it a little complicated and used various forms of "3 am" for a few things, like 3amart.blogspot.com and www.twitter.com/3amartprod. Although flickr is aktie9 & shop and a few other places.

When did you open your Etsy shop, and how did you choose its name?
I opened my shop in 2007. I chose the name 3 Am Art Productions in the WEE hours of 2003. It's the name I gave my hodge podge of artwork and crafty things, that I had been doing while whiling the hours away till my son, Liam was born. 3 Am was the time I was feeling good, awake and able to work on things. I was very sick during this pregnancy, and wish I had found veganism then, as I would have felt tons better. I did eat a lot of fruit and veg during this pregnancy, but was also eating fish. Fruits and vegetables were the things I could actually keep down. I've been thinking lately that, there was a reason my body was handing me back the nastier stuff, i.e.: sometimes you really should listen to your body a little bit closer. I also had a lot of misconceptions about tofu. I have learned oodles since then.

What kinds of items do you sell in your shop, and what inspired you to start creating them?
I began doing doodling in paint programs and thinking I could sell my little drawings as cards or supplies for folks to buy the cards. Then, my second son was born, and I was given a smashing camera to take his photos, instead of going out to have them done. I'd had a bad experience with a photographer losing an entire order of work of my older son and his cousin. All irreplaceable photos and adorable moments... just gone. I was so upset I didn't wanna go through that again. Since I'm a DIYer at heart from art to car fixing, I read my manual from beginning to end and I tutored myself on how to take a good picture. It was a process for me. Although I had lots of experience with other cameras, digital was all new. I sell mostly photos in my shop, but I also sew and sell some sewn items from time to time. I also love polymer clay and make and sell some of those items as well. I just began selling some of my photography as digital artwork in the form of banners/avatar sets. I'm inspired by Nature and her good works and deeds. I love animals. I love trees, I'm a big eco-junkie so anything nature inspires me. I love colour. Loud, bright, popping you can't miss it colour! Sometimes I like pale, soft muted tones too... I change daily. I think I'm part chameleon sometimes.

Do you donate through your shop to any charities or do any volunteer work?
Yes, I do. I help out on EtsyVeg and the POE Street teams. I also donate a photo from time to time to the EFA Charity of the Month. I also work with EtsyVeg whenever there is a team charity donation going on. I will use my Volvo wagon if any dog in my area needs a ride home or to a safe haven. I pass along information for the CT ACO whenever she has dogs in need of a home, which is all the time. I've picked up dogs for rescues lots of times and I will do it again, whenever I can. My kids and hubby usually come with me, so they can experience it too. I think it's important to tell our kids the truth about everything, every aspect of life... even the sadder parts. Unless it's downright unexplainable or too scary, they should be told the truth. They need to know things so they can be streetwise and ready for the real world.

What are some of your favorite things about Etsy?
I like the speed and ease of listing items. I like the camaraderie I've found in the groups and with other folks I've met. I've made a lot of friends here and it's wonderful experience. I think the people are great. I think Etsy itself is great. I especially love treasuries and looking items up by the search. I always find what I'm looking for. Everyone is soo nice here. I've not had many bad experiences so Etsy makes me very happy.

Do you sell your items outside of Etsy, either online or in retail shops?
I don't sell off of Etsy at this time. My kids are still little, and I'm planning on homeschooling next year, so Etsy and keeping up with that is enough for now. Just doing this right now is enough; I've got all the irons in the fire and then some.

Have you been featured anywhere?
I've been really lucky - lots of really nice folks have featured me and passed on my photos to their friends. I've been on the front page of Etsy and many blogs and sites. Yvonne of EtsyVeg and handmade designers.com has featured me too. Sometimes I write for the EtsyVeg blog and post things for the team. I have been featured in treasuries and on other folks' blogs from time to time. Roni of Daisy Wares even featured me on her Daisy Wares FB page. She's such a sweetie!

How long have you been vegan, and what made you go vegan?
I have been Vegan for about three years now. My sister made me do it! Literally. She read Skinny Bitch and the Skinny Bitch in the Kitch books and began harping on me to change my diet. I'd been long complaining of feeling like garbage. Funny, it shocked me at first, that it was what I was eating. Well, we do that everyday don't we? We don't dip ourselves in an oil slick every day, do we? So logic is... it's the food we're eating. Once vegan, I realized I was celiac and got tested. HEY, I was right. Sounds hard doesn't it? Being both celiac and vegan? It does to an outsider of course. But since I was lucky enough to go vegan first, and then discovered the celiac... it was like stepping down a path and the transition was fairly easy. 'Cept for Pizza. I can find Pizza now. I'm just very very unhappy with the sauces. See I'm also a geek. I read anything and everything I can for health now, and have found out that BPA is in canned foods. So no more red sauces in cans. Jar only. Since I don't like it, I DIY. I make my own on a lot of things. I've long been a DIYer, and come from a long line of artists, so it just goes hand in hand.

What are your favorite foods?
Pizza with homemade sauce and Daiya cheese. I love cheddar Sheese on gluten free noodles. I eat a lot of homemade and I also drink a lot of smoothies and eat plain old veggies and fruits. I try to make veggies just by themselves or steamed with a tiny bit of dressing as my mainstay for eating and meals, or prepped, processed stuff in much smaller amounts. I do love to bake for the kids. Since I'm gluten free there is the chance they will be at some point also, so I bake everything gluten free. Since I cannot leave anything to someone else, I DIY my very own flour mixture.

Do you have any favorite vegan things, like books, websites, stores, etc.?
I try to buy from Etsy folks as much as possible when I'm buying things we want. I use thrift stores a lot to recycle and upcycle items. I use Cosmo's or Pangea to get my Daiya and Sheese. I love The Living Earth in Worcester for all our organic produce, The Loving Hut for vegan Chinese, and The Belmont Vegetarian Restaurant for the absolute best vegan Jamaican and Island Cuisine ever. I try to stick with buying from the small guys as much as I can.

What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have?
Fixing and keeping my Saabs and Volvo happy, reading, researching, veganism, animal rights issues, human rights issues, eco issues. If it's a cause, I'm all over it! I love to talk and think about politics, especially, the part about trying something new. I like kawaii things.. little, tiny, cute things... I have an addiction for them. I also love colour and art. And music. I live, breathe and sing music. Well, I used to sing. Now, I mostly listen to and LOVE music. I cannot live without it. I love reading the lyrics and using them as quotes. I also love to blog. No kidding? I have three of them. My art page, My Saab & Volvo blog, and now Worceatsveg.blogspot.com where I blog about all the vegan eating travels I make in Worcester area and vicinity. I love to write. I'm working on a book of short stories that I've concocted in my head, and a novel as well. I'm constantly doing some sort of writing or playing with the kids... and running pell mell all over the place. Sometimes I forget things. I can be spacy at times, since I have so much going on.

Do you have any animal companions?
Sure do! We adopted Duke, Black Labrador Mix from occretrieverrescue.com in Orange county NY. He is awesome! So laid back and calm... just love him to pieces! I don't know if he's really black lab or has any lab in him at all. He does however, have some Chow. He has the telltale purple tongue that Chow dogs have. He's so sweet we don't care what he is. After adopting him we decided to foster his polar opposite, a full blooded English Black Labrador we named Sadie. She lived with us for 18 months and then we finally found the right home for her. We were going to keep her. She wasn't fitting in well with the family though. She was like living with the proverbial Bull in a China Shop. So we found her the right type of home that could accommodate that and wear her out on a daily basis. She's awesome and we love her new family. We also have Minnie: at best guess she is a Chihuhua Papillon mix. She's little, tiny and has an extra loud bark. She's not called Buffy of Barkington for nothing! She guards me at all cost against any tiny little cricket type noise, and since the trucks that go by the house on a minute to minute basis she takes her job extra super seriously.

Duke was the one who saved her. He's the kind of dog who never barks. I mean Minnie has to seriously hear the coyotes or something for him to bother. He saw her wandering on the sidewalk alone one winter day in a city area, and barked voraciously in the car. I pulled over and opened my door, and for some reason I had the presence of mind to say here puppy come here in a high pitched voice... and she ran to me and leaped into my arms and shivered the whole ride home. It was a day like no other for my family. I had looked high and low for Duke it literally took months and months to find him. Then all of a sudden I've got 2 kids and three dogs living with me, and my husband is sleeping on the couch wondering what freight train just hit him and took away the love of his life. Things have settled down now and everyone has their place. Hubby has been let back into the big bed & the dogs have their own. In the case of Minnie, she sleeps right next to my feet now. She's trained me well. I'm happy knowing how safe I am. No one in the neighborhood will even talk to me when I'm out walking her and Duke. Unless they wanna go deaf from her barking that is.

Do you have any future plans for your shop?
I'm working on a collection of my photography for a coffee table book to sell in my shop. I'm also hoping to do some poems and uplifting sayings superimposed onto my photos. I also am working on editing letters into some of the 8x10's in my shop, so folks can buy the prints for their children's rooms. Like for example "J is for Jellyfish." They will be able to buy them in sets to spell a name, or a word, or singly. I'm looking for a new printer for printing my artwork myself, and working on a set of cards with letters. Just like the 8x10's with letters on them I'm also looking to make a set that kids can hold & learn their letters with. Or perhaps parents can hang them on the walls to decorate the playroom. I'm never at a loss for ideas. I'm always at a loss for time. Plus, since I research everything to death, I wanna find the most eco-friendly way to do things... I stress out over this sometimes.

What is the vegan community like in your area?
The Worcester area is great for vegan folks. Worcester itself can be user unfriendly though, so do check out where places are online first, before heading our way, and get good directions from a map. Be careful to go at least 5MPH above the speed limit or you will get beeped at. ;) It's really great though, even after living in this area for most of my life. It can be confusing. I've just barely tapped into the vegan community here. I'm slowly getting out there, and meeting more folks. We have lots of things going on from eating together for a cause, to donating time on local farm sanctuaries, to helping grow the fruits and veggies we consume. There are a lot of like minded folks living here. Lots of information and help. Folks are all very nice and helpful. We take the kids wherever we go eating out here, and even get the surprised "Ohh vegan kids??" from time to time. We talk about it all the time. My kids are little vegan awareness drones. They remember conversations we've had and tell others when we're out and about. My kids are totally unafraid to tell folks that they are vegans and why they are vegans. One son will regularly spot a Mcd's and DD (Dunkin Donuts) and start rattling off the no-no's about those bad places. He has no issue telling folks the truth. Mostly, I think he's sad he cannot get a vegan donut at Dunkin Donuts. I think the same way he does. I should be able to go anywhere and get a GF vegan item. I mean come on it's 2010! I explain it to them on their level and they already know a lot of larger adult words... they scare me sometimes with their knowledge and words used. Nothing is to hard for kids. I think the earlier you start them on the road to understanding the better it is for all of us in the future.

When did you learn your craft, and how did you become interested in it?
I've been making and crafting since the tender age of three. Crayolas and homemade play-do was what I began with. I learned photography in high school and loved it. My photography teacher was the best person. The most amazing lady I've ever known. She was awesome, and so supportive of me and the kids in class. She was also a willing participant in taking me and others to local ecological gatherings I was also involved in. I remember the best idea I had for a photo in HS. I was on the bike in my downtown and saw the train headed in. I stood on the tracks. Right in front of it and snapped the shutter. Moved off the tracks and let is pass by. It was a cool photo. Unfortunately, I was a klutz and ripped the negative. It came out OK, but not as good as could have. I was never adept with 35MM and got turned off of it for a while. My next camera was a APS camera, and I loved it for a really long time and spent a ton of money on film. When I got my first digital cam and began shooting and never had to worry about running out of film, the magic came back. When I began learning about macro photography I fell hardfast into love with it. So interesting the world seen up close. I love photo taking. I never run out of new ideas, I'm constantly seeing new photos that I need to capture. It's a sickness I tell ya.

Why do you think it's important to buy handmade?
I think it's very important to foster the handmade community and buy from it. Because it's the people. The people you see on the streets, people you love and have things in common with. People who learn and do things differently. People who are growing and evolving like I am that I'm contributing to and then letting them contribute to others... it's a people to people thing. I think we need to do more of that, and less of the plunking pennies into the big corporations' pockets. I think the people running big business have forgotten themselves. People come first. Big business can sink or swim, IMO. They don't treat us or the planet right; the people do better on their own. In a word it's the people. ;)

If you could choose to have any one superpower, what would it be?
Saving the world... and making it greener and having folks' care more about it. Is that a super power? Or perhaps to get the corporation CEOs to realize it's them being greedy taking 15M per year, and not the Unions or workers doing the same thing, seeing how that same amount of money that one person is getting is going to feed 1,000's of families, instead of just one person who cannot possibly ever use that amount of money in their lifetime. Maybe my superpower should be to give common sense back to those in power...

If you could come back as a ghost, who would you haunt and why?
Can I pick one bad person per week? Probably, I'd wanna haunt Rush Limbaugh or some other person who spews nonsense and rhetoric... to get them to think & change and be a better person. But really just pick any bad doobie. I'll put them on my list. ;)
