Fundraising for Japan

In response to the recent events in Japan, several Vegan Etsy Team shops have posted special donation items or opted to donate a portion of proceeds to various rescue and relief organizations. Here are some of the shops that are already pitching in:

Taryn from Oh, Danger has issued the following statement:
The recent (and ongoing) disaster in Japan is absolutely heartbreaking. The situation seems to be worsening on a daily basis. While everyone is struggling to help the injured, missing, and displaced human victims, I know that my fellow vegans are feeling pain for our often-forgotten animal friends as well. In my online ArtFire shop I am offering a set of cat postcards for a 2$ donation (plus shipping). The money collected will be donated to help the animals displaced by the Japan disaster."

In addition to Taryn's special product, until March 30th, AlethaFaye is generously donating 50% of shop sales of select items to JEARS (Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support), a coalition of 3 no-kill animal organizations in Japan. More information about this rescue group can be found on their Facebook page.

Panda with Cookie is also donating 50% of all profits from the sale of her unique and adorable large plush monsters to Shelter Box, a group providing on-the-ground earthquake relief.

And Kommoner is holding an auction through her Facebook page of items from a variety of sellers - choose items to bid on from a gallery found in Kommoner's FB photo albums. All proceeds from the auction will go to ARK, Animal Refuge Kansai.

Many other vegan sellers are pitching in - if you know of any please leave a comment!

A Giving Heart: Neva
A Special Valentine's Artist Story and Giveaway!

Meet Neva - longtime Vegan Etsy Team member, artist, and devoted animal advocate. First, read her moving story. Then, find out how to WIN an adorable prize pack of items from her shop!

Words from the artist:
I've long been active in animal rights, veganism, and animal rescue. I've also been painting, drawing, sewing and creating all kinds of crafts for as long as I can remember. I like to make items celebrating the beauty of nature and animals. I now have two Etsy shops: my original shop, Neva Jewelry and Design, and my second shop, a side project for tiny plush cats called Camp Kittens.

My latest rescue efforts have centered around stray, feral, and abandoned cats in my neighborhood. My husband Sean and I moved into this neighborhood and soon discovered that approximately 60 cats were living on the grounds of the local elementary school, and new colonies were spreading out around the neighborhood as the cats got too crowded. Many neighbors didn't like the cats, and our first involvement was finding some of the cats dying from being poisoned - we rushed them to the emergency vet though it was too late to save them.

We have now spayed/neutered and vaccinated approximately 45 cats and returned to them to the neighborhood. We've received help from some neighbors, so now the cats live in various yards and shelters with a much more manageable number living at the school. We've removed and found homes for about 22 cats who were tame or were kittens. Unfortunately, a few cats were extremely ill and had to be euthanized.

One thing I found through doing a TNR (trap, neuter, return) program on this scale was that some people weren't supportive because they didn't understand its goals. So when I explained to these neighbors that if I was successful, then 1) no new kittens would be born into the colony, 2) the number of cats would immediately decrease as I sought homes for tame cats and kittens, and 3) all remaining cats would be vaccinated against disease, people became very open to the effort. I still sometimes have neighbors stop and thank me as they drive by while I'm walking my dogs.

When we initially began this project, I went out every single day to feed the cats at the school as well as another few cats who made their home bases elsewhere. Now more neighbors have taken on feeding cats, and there are just fewer cats around. Four of the once feral cats, Deedee, Leelee, Pookie, and Apollo, now live inside with us. Deedee was hit by a car and severely injured, and had to stay inside during her long recovery. She was deeply bonded to her mother, Leelee, so I brought her inside to keep Deedee company. Pookie is older and is now deeply attached to our dogs. In addition, after Apollo was adopted but returned to us for misbehavior, he also stayed in our home. He has a great deal of energy and really needs to be with our two boys Liam and Obi so he can get the rough play out of his system every day.

One of my main goals for my Etsy shops is to help finance my rescue efforts, but I also hope to raise money for donations to some of my favorite charities. For example, I did a pre-Christmas fundraiser for Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary. Because I work full time and have an autoimmune disease, I don't always get as many things listed in my Etsy shops as I might like to. But creative work is also my therapy in a way. It's something joyful and fulfilling when sometimes rescues don't go as I planned and the evening news is full of sorrow.

I've been vegan for about 16 years now, after having been vegetarian since high school. I love being vegan, I love to cook, and I love to eat (a little too much). Being vegan is the ideal diet for my autoimmune condition as animal fats and the hormones in animal products fuel inflammation. However, the real reason I'm vegan is because of my love for animals. I can't love them as much as I do and wear pieces of them or eat them. I've never once regretted the decision to be vegan, though even so sometimes knowing the kind of pain animals go through can be heart-wrenching.

I grew up in a family that essentially ate a big slab of meat, an over-cooked vegetable and some kind of starch at every meal. When I look at the colorful rainbows of vegetables I eat now, and the different cuisines I've tried from all over the world, and as I appreciate the subtle flavors of fresh herbs and spices, I can't imagine why anyone would find a vegan diet limiting. Being vegan has expanded my palate and made me appreciate a much greater variety of flavors and textures.
And now, for the giveaway! In order to enter, you must do ALL of the following:
  • mark one or both of Neva's shops as a "favorite" on Etsy
  • follow this blog
  • leave a comment telling us why you like Neva's story and art, and how you've entered!
What you'll win:
  • A prize pack including a postcard and a magnet featuring Neva'a art, a one-of-a-kind handmade pin crafted by Neva, AND a few little goodies from the Vegan Etsy Team!
Entry Deadline:
  • Entries must be made by February 28, 2011. One lucky winner will be announced in the beginning of March!
Good luck to all, and Happy Valentine's Day!

Vegan Etsy teams up with SASHA to help celebrate 10th Anniversary!

SASHA Farm, the largest sanctuary of its kind in the Midwest, is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year! And the Vegan Etsy Team is excited to be part of the festivities. Team members will be donating various items to the Silent Auction that will be held during the 10th Anniversary Celebration Banquet, scheduled for March 12. Check out the SASHA website to learn more about this amazing place and about the event. And if you or your group has something to contribute, we're sure they'd love to hear from you too!

From the SASHA event announcement:

The 10th Anniversary Celebration Banquet and Silent Auction will be held at Weber's Inn in Ann Arbor on Saturday, March 12th. More details are available on the flyer, and tickets can be purchased online, at the sanctuary, or by sending a check to SASHA Farm, PO Box 222, Manchester, MI 48158. We have a great evening planned, and you don't want to miss it!

We're starting our plea for silent auction donations a little early this year... The only requirement is that the items donated are animal-friendly. The proceeds from the auction each year account for a significant portion of our income and all that money goes directly toward the care of over 250 rescued animals.

If you plan to donate this year, you can let us know by email or by calling the sanctuary at (734) 428-9617.

Have YOU adopted a turkey yet?

It's November - a time when the air gets a little crisper, vegan bloggers go crazy for VeganMoFo, we all plan insane Thanksgiving menus... and we all adopt turkeys at Farm Sanctuary!

Adopt a turkey? Why, that's madness! But no, it's true - you can adopt your very own turkey today! You won't actually be taking him (or her) home, of course; your turkey will be staying warm and snug at home at the Farm. But your donation will help provide all the necessities and comforts that make life there so grand!

If you haven't done so already, make adopting a turkey part of your Thanksgiving tradition. And if you haven't adopted a turkey yet this year, what are you waiting for?! :D

Walk for Farm Animals 2010 - Support Daisy Wares!

I'm sure you've all heard of Farm Sanctuary, the amazing animal sanctuary with locations in New York and California doing work to educate the public about the true nature of farm animals, and to save some of those animals from the lives they would suffer on factory farms. Their upcoming Walk for Farm Animals will continue to help raise awareness, and also help raise funds for Farm Sanctuary to continue to do this important work. Vegan Etsy Team member Roni of Daisy Wares will be participating in this year's Walk. Check out this great info on the event and how you can support it!

* * *

I'm Roni from Daisy Wares, and I'll be participating in the Walk for Farm Animals to help Farm Sanctuary raise awareness about the realities of factory farming. The annual Walk for Farm Animals helps fund Farm Sanctuary's education and advocacy efforts.

Farm Sanctuary is the nation's leading farm animal protection organization. Since incorporating in 1986, Farm Sanctuary has worked to expose and stop cruel practices of the "food animal" industry through research and investigations, legal and institutional reforms, public awareness projects, youth education, and direct rescue and refuge efforts. Farm Sanctuary shelters in Watkins Glen, New York, and Orland, California, provide lifelong care for hundreds of rescued animals, who have become ambassadors for farm animals everywhere by educating visitors about the realities of factory farming.

I hope you will make a pledge of support for farm animals in need by making a donation for my participation in the 2010 Walk.

SOS Thrift: Shop for our Oceans!

Vegans have a habit of going above and beyond for the animals, and the members of the Vegan Etsy Team are certainly no exception. One of the most ambitious and inspiring projects undertaken by a VET member of late is S.O.S. Thrift, an online thrift shop designed to address the Gulf oil spill head on. (After you check out the blog, make sure you follow them on Twitter!) Built and run by Pippi of Uber Duper Creations, the shop's proceeds go directly to help fund the work of Sea Shepherd's Gulf Rescue Campaign. To learn more about S.O.S., read on for the press release put together by fellow VET member Heather Henry of 3am Art Productions (aktie9).

S.O.S.:1.The letters represented by the Morse Code signal · · · - - - · · ·, used as an international distress signal, especially by ships and aircraft. 2. A call or signal for help. 3. Now a call or signal to shop S.O.S. Thrift, an online marketplace to help Sea Shepherd Conservation Society clean up the Gulf Oil Spill and efforts to save animals and habitats affected by the crisis.

The ocean is crying out for help. The distress call is loud and clear. Luckily, someone has heard that call and is doing something positive about it. In her spare time from raising two lovely little girls, Pippi has opened up a weekend thrift store online. Items are being listed on a rolling basis, so check in regularly. You can donate or you can shop! Wonderful quality goods are there for your perusal, from the handmade world as well as some gently used items. You get two kinds of shopping in one convenient, online place.

Please head on over to check out the S.O.S. Thrift Blog to shop for our oceans!

All monies collected (sans shipping) is being donated to Sea Shepherd's Gulf Rescue Campaign. Sea Shepherd is working with the US Government and others in the campaign to stop the flow of oil and recover the Gulf area from the BP Oil Spill. They will be securing a third boat, training volunteers in Haz-mat work, and cleaning animals who have become drenched in oil. We are all hopeful they will save many, many lives and confident that they will do great work. We are here to lend them our support and stand behind them in pride.

Pippi's enthusiasm is infectious - it has already spread to several of her friends, who are helping by donating and getting the message out. One person sure can make a difference - it only takes some action.

Sincerely, Heather Henry

Veg*n Etsy Shops Come Together to Help Animals after the BP Oil Disaster

Ever since the BP oil spill happened I've been spinning my wheels, wondering what to do to help. I have two kids which is a full time job, so heading down there to actively participate in the cleanup process isn't going to happen, at least right now. I might get my chance of course - sadly it doesn't look like cleanup is going to happen overnight.

(Thank you to Cari of Loveluca for lending me this lovely photo.)

Then Lisa of Panda with Cookie told the Etsy Veg street team her plans to help: "***20% of all sales {from the Panda with Cookie shop} go to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, who are preparing to clean and care for animals affected by the horrible oil disaster happening on the Gulf Coast.***". Well, I jumped right up onto that bandwagon and helped myself to the reins. ;)

I decided I'd do the same thing, and asked around on the other street teams I'm on, as well as the one I help facilitate, if others would like to help too. The response was immediate! People out there are concerned and looking to do something, anything to help out. Here are some other Etsians who are already contributing:
I will edit my blog as time goes on and others join forces. Please check individual shop announcements for end dates and more details on donations.

Thanks for checking this out and helping!

Thanks to Heather of 3am Art Productions (aktie9 on Etsy) for putting together this great post. Is your Etsy shop or organization doing something to help with Gulf cleanup efforts? Please let us know in the comments!

Three Bulls, One Amazing Story.

Those of you who are regular readers will remember the three bulls who we saved from slaughter a few months back. The boys were headed for a terrible demise - except, of course, that they were under the watchful eye of friend and team mate Jodi. With the help of many friends Jodi managed to collect the funds necessary to rescue the animals, and has been sheltering them on her land ever since.

But oh life, it is full of surprises. Jodi and her partner, proprietors of This is It! Creations, have recently learned that they must move by the end of May. On top of all of the normal woes a couple faces upon moving, they also have the care of the bulls to consider.

But it seems that where a heart is willing, an answer will appear sooner or later. Hooves and Paws Animal Rescue in California has agreed to take in the bulls! However, there are issues of transportation to consider, and the rescue also needs funds for a permanent shelter for the animals.

So once again, the fundraising is on! Drop by the ChipIn site and remember, everything helps. As Jodi says, "Fingers crossed that we'll raise enough to get these 3 to a wonderful forever home... I am forever grateful to you all. Because of you, we saved 3 lives - and I know we can get them to a great home where they can live out their lives in peace." And she's offering a Spotty Friend note pad to anyone who donates $25 or more through the site. Win win? I think so.

A little help from my friends
-or-
The Saving of The Bulls

For those of you who have been following the story of the three bulls who were to be sold to slaughter, we've got some good news for you: The money was raised, and Pooka Cow, Spotty Friend, and Less Spotty Friend are now safe in the care of Jodi and her husband! The three bulls were able to spend Valentine's Day out to pasture where they belong, rather than en route to a slaughterhouse.

Jodi has informed us that, all told, over 100 people donated in one way or another to make it happen. It's a significant sum to raise in just under two weeks, and just goes to show how many of us truly value the life of each and every creature. She'll be keeping us all up to date on the cows' progress and wellbeing on her This Is It! Creations blog.

This past Saturday was indeed a joyous day for that now somewhat larger family. The new cow parents have dived headfirst into a crash course on bovine care. Says Jodi: "If you had asked us a few weeks ago whether we would be cow parents today, I would've just laughed. You never know what turns life will take, that's for sure!"

Feeding and care of the three bulls is a significant investment, so the couple is grateful to continue to receive any donations through the established ChipIn widget or site. As usual, Jodi's sentiments sum it up best:
We are now the proud parents of these sweet boys, and we are thrilled that they will be able to live out their lives... I promise that I will keep you all updated - for now we are just going to focus on taking care of them and trying to raise enough money to make sure they have everything they need.
Spoken like a true cowmama. :)

Vegan Craft Sample Bags

Having just received my Vegan Craft Sample Bag, I wanted to blog about it. However, instead of posting a few photos and a general write up, as I have done previously, I decided to review each item from a Vegan Etsy Team members shop that are in the bag. A bit of a mammoth task, since the bag is full of many lovely goodies, so I'm going to write about it in stages. Starting with a photo of the bag itself and a couple of photos of the items swished accross it.

As you can see, a fab mix of vegan goodies. Wanna see them close up? So did I. I had so much fun looking through my bag, and more fun photographing the individual items, cos I could them look at them all again!
In no particular order:

I wanted to photograph the label as much as the incense sticks from Mrs Tattooed Geek.
The label is funky and very intriguing. the incense sticks have a strong smell, that will scent my room nicely. they are dusted with glitter, a very nice effect. The gorgeous Etsy shop sells such wonderful items as air fresheners, jewellery, candles, and lots of other fabulous delights.

This funky card comes from Late to the Revolution. A novel card, showing vegan love in a unique way. I love it. Their shop sells imaginative items such as handmade headphones, paper goods, beanies and lots more.

This sweet magnet, displaying a pretty pattern inspired from Japanese Temari balls from CraftyPanties.
Their shop has the most adorable Temari Balls and Fabric Balls, in wonderful colours and patterns. For those that don't know what Temari Balls are, check out Crafty Panties, and prepare to be amazed.

Crye's Creations was adorable little envelopes, the right size for business cards, I know I'll be using them soon! also cute little note books for those very inportant messages. love the pretty paper used. Her shop is full of lovely creative goodness such as art doll kits and mini envelopes.

How's that for starters, lots more samples and reviews to come, keep checking back, as I sample the samples, and am delighted at the delights!
Vegan Craft Samples can be bought HERE, and check out the blog for further information.
And I forgot to mention the important bit- as well as receiving a bag full of fantastic vegan items, 100% profits from the sale of the bags go to help animal charities - a perfect chance to treat yourself without the guilt of spending - it's all good!

Don't gimmie no bull... gimmie three!

It was a fantastic first week of fundraising for the three bulls who need our help: Pooka Cow, Spotty Friend, and Less Spotty Friend. Thanks to the efforts of an extensive and tireless effort, something in the neighborhood of $1600 has been raised! This is great news.

But we're in the home stretch now - we must reach a grand total of $36oo in the next five days! Let's not even talk about what would happen if we didn't get there, because we are going to make this happen.

If you'd like to contribute to the cause, there's plenty of great ways to do so. Of course you could just go ahead and chip in - we'd really appreciate it! You could also go shopping at one of the fabulous shops which is donating a portion of proceeds to saving the bulls. The list of shops participating has been growing by the day, and currently looks like this:

thisisit.etsy.com - donating 100% of sales on both 2/3 and 2/10
veganosaurus.etsy.com - donating 50% of sales through 2/13
mvegan5.etsy.com - donating 10% of sales through 2/15
holisticallyheather.etsy.com - donating 100% of sales through 2/13
auntflospads.etsy.com - donationg 100% of sales through 2/13
aktie9.etsy.com - donating 100% of sales through 2/13
lolalynn.etsy.com - donating 75% of bracelet sales through 2/13
leandogpottery.etsy.com - donating 20% of sales through 2/13
kimbascritters.etsy.com - donating 50% of sales through 2/11
oooohshiny.etsy.com - donating 50% of sales through 2/13
doxiedoodles.etsy.com - donating 50% of sales through 2/13
vegandogslife.etsy.com - donating 100% of sales through 2/13
silentlotus.etsy.com - donating 25% of sales through 2/13
jenoconnell.etsy.com - donating 25% of sales through 2/13

Pretty impressive. Have fun shopping, and feel good about helping us help the animals!

P.S. - One of the best things you can do to help is help us spread the word. Please feel free to repost this blog post, tweet about it, or post it on Facebook!

The NYC Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti - One amazing day.

Was it the bake sale to end all bake sales? Possibly. (Though from what I've been hearing, these Vegan Bake Sales for Haiti have just been one rocking event after another.) At the crack of 10:45 am, a team of dedicated vegans arrived at the doors of Moo Shoes, the beloved vegan shoe store on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Immediately we sprung to action: cupcakes here! Raffle table there! You, grab that chalk and hit the sidewalk! And by 11:30 the store was a sight to behold - delights from wall to wall for sweet toothers and shoe lovers alike.

Throughout the day, more bakers and volunteers appeared; the number of people who showed up to help, eat, and party was pretty astonishing. For the first few hours, and then for several other stints during the day, it was a bit hard to walk through the store for the crowd! Any direction I looked, all I saw was happy people holding bakery boxes filled up with homemade vegan treats.

The day flew by, one giant blur of a cocktail-esque cookie dance party. I got to sample many extraordinary goodies, including homemade green tea red bean buns, pesto pinwheels, double dark chocolate truffles, buckeyes, donuts from Babycakes (thank you kind stranger!), mini tomato muffins, pizzelles, danishes!, twinkies!!, and probably a few other delicacies that I've forgotten in my post-bake-sale-sugar-crash delirium.

That list doesn't even compare, though, to what I missed out on: I don't even know how many kinds of gorgeous cupcakes including fauxstess!! and my own chocolate orange with princess frosting and maple with black walnut frosting - nope, never got to try my own cupcakes! - adorable heart-shaped peanut butter and jelly cookies, many other kinds of delectable truffles, oatmeal pies, pretzels, scones, fudge, rocky road brownies, chocolate dipped fresh and dried fruits, splendidly adorned sugar cookies, cheesecake... I think I have to stop thinking about it or I'll cry. Why, oh why, didn't I bring one hundred dollars and ten tupperware containers? Learn from my mistakes people. Let's just say this: if ever a bakery carried the array of vegan deliciousness that was displayed at the NYC bake sale, none of us would ever leave that bakery again. So when you go to the Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti in your area, stock up!

The whole day through, our tables of baked goods were a feast for the senses. We had a continual supply coming from the back with which we restocked the tables, and we just kept selling through! Not to mention the raffle table - at times we got so busy back there I could barely keep up; at one point there were three of us taking tickets, and it needed all three of us just to hold it down. And no wonder: local businesses and crafters were very generous in donating some truly awesome prizes.

And all of that leads to the really fabulous part - the point of the whole shebang. By the end of the day, we had raised nearly $46oo to donate to Doctors Without Borders, to support their current work in Haiti! And with the last few baked goods left over being sold at places of work the following Monday, plus a few other contributions that trickled in, we've actually now reached $5k. We'd love to find a sponsor to match us, so that we can send a full $10,000 - if you have any ideas for that please leave a comment. But either way, I'd say not too shabby for a lil' ol' bake sale, now is it.

Sadly, little can be done to alleviate the grief caused by the loss of so many lives. But work can and should be done to help heal the sick and wounded and begin to rebuild. Therefore those of us in a position to offer assistance must focus on these immediate and pressing needs. The organizers of the NYC bake sale feel that Doctors Without Borders is doing important work that is making a real impact in Haiti right now, literally at this moment, and we're excited to be able to send them a donation that will give tangible support to that work. There are of course other very worthwhile groups on the ground in Haiti doing work very much worth supporting, including Partners in Health, WSPA, and Mercy Corps.

I continue to be moved and inspired by the wave of vegan bake sales across the country and, in fact, throughout the world. At last count, we have collectively raised something in the neighborhood of $35,000 to support Haiti relief efforts through various organizations. There's a common misconception that vegans care more for animals than for people; anyone who believes that, please consider yourself corrected. The point of true compassion is that we don't draw a species line! I am so proud of the vegan community, but more importantly I am so thrilled that we've been able to come together to do something that will actually make a difference for the Haitian people.

And it doesn't end here! The coming weekend brings vegan bake sales in D.C., New Orleans, Little Rock, Falls Church, and likely others. If there aren't any set up in your area, well why not go ahead and organize one! Or if baking isn't your thing, get creative - teach a yoga class for Haiti. Sell ice cream sundaes for Haiti. Organize a five mile walk for Haiti where participants ask friends and family for sponsorship. Put out a donation jar at your office or place of business. Have a plant sale. Finally have that yard sale you've been thinking about and donate the proceeds - get the whole block in on it and place a small ad in the newspaper so that you draw a crowd. Throw a party with a $5 cover charge! There are so many things you can do to help people get involved, and generate a sizable contribution in the process. And if you don't have the time, of course there's nothing wrong with a plain old donation. :)

Disclaimer: The really awesome photos (top pic of cupcakes, pic of twinkies, pic of fauxstess, pic of cinnamon rolls) and the pic of me (immediately above) were *not* taken by me! The rest were. You can see a whole set of photos from the NYC Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti on our Flickr Pool.

Going once, going twice, going three times... SOLD to the compassionate landowner instead of the slaughterhouse!! (If we'll give a hand, that is...)

Animal lovers everywhere, here is a story you won't want to miss.

Jodi of the amazing VET shop This Is It! Creations made a terrible discovery over the weekend: that these three bulls who graze on her property were to be sold for slaughter in short order. Being a person of high ideals, naturally Jodi immediately started looking for an answer - that is, a way to keep these three gorgeous animals from such a brutal and unnecessary death. The solution? Buy them! But cows don't come cheap; their freedom can indeed be purchased, but it will come to the tune of about $3600. Not only that, but the payment must be made by the end of next week!

And so, friends, we ask for your help. Chip in to save Pooka Cow, Spotty Friend, and Less Spotty Friend!

Important note: though the ChipIn widget here says that the final date to donate is March 13, in reality it is February 13!

Several VET member shops including 3 AM Art Productions, Veganosaurus, Holistically Heather, and Cards and Jewelry by Michele as well as Etsy for Animals' Lola Lynn are donating portions of sales through the zero hour. More shops are adding sales donations all the time - Jodi is keeping an updated list on her own This Is It blog. Jodi's own shop will be putting 100% of all sales from today, Wednesday February 3, towards saving the boys. So get shopping already!

Just a few dollars from each of us can make a big difference. These lives matter! Help Jodi to help her friends. What's their alternative to a terrifying slaughterhouse? Says Jodi:
"We've been asked where the cows will go if we do raise enough money to save them - they will stay here, at least for the short term. We have 11 acres of land, a barn, and a stream. We are planning to create a line of products where all of the profits will go toward their care (hay, vet bills, fence mending, etc.) If we can find a loving family with enough land to adopt them, we are definitely open to that as well."
Country idyll or the abattoir - three lives are on the line. So, wanna buy a journal? :)

The most amazing bake sale ever.

This will just be a brief post, to be followed by a much more substantial one later in the week (with pics!).

Yesterday was the NYC Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti. The main organizers were the VET's very own Lisa of Panda with Cookie and our good friend Dayna of the awesome blog Seitan Said Dance; I played a distant third fiddle and MANY others contributed very significant help, like the amazing Janice who designed our flier.

Well, to put it lightly the event was a raging success! A completely astounding number of wonderful people baked a ridiculously delightful array (and quantity) of baked goodies. People came out en masse to volunteer, buy, eat, purchase raffle tickets, donate, and generally support the cause.

Thanks to this outpouring of awesomeness, we were able to raise approximately $4600 in a single day, every penny of which will be sent directly to Doctors Without Borders to help fund their current work in Haiti.

To everyone who was involved in this and all of the other Vegan Bake Sales for Haiti that have been happening and continue to happen all over the world - collecting over TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR HAITI to date!! - thank you, thank you, thank you.

When vegans really come together to make some thing happen, is there anything we can't do?

How do you respond to a crisis? Vegans fundraise!
(Part Two.)

So yesterday you learned all about the great vegan fundraising efforts happening for Haiti right on Etsy. What else are vegans doing? We're all having bake sales!

OK. Now, on its face that sounds a bit silly. But hear me out. When done right, a good bake sale can bring in some dough, (ha ha! - pun enjoyed but not intended) and I'm talking dough that can be counted in hundreds or even thousands. And believe me when I tell you we're doing it right. You get some vegans together who are really into baking, and the delicacies that come forth are out of this world.

And then there's the matter of quantity. There are bake sales happening all over the U.S. and in parts of Europe, and maybe elsewhere too. Several bake sales have already happened here in the states. I don't know about all of them, but those I do know about have taken in close to a collective $10k! Of course every penny is going straight to Haiti. Each bake sale team has chosen its own worthwhile organization to support - groups being donated to include Doctors Without Borders, Partners in Health, World Society for the Protection of Animals, and Food for Life Global.

I'll be participating in the bake sale here in NYC - it's going on all day long at Moo Shoes on Sunday, January 31st. (Hey fellow NYC VET members - hope to see you there!) Yeah, I'm making cupcakes. You know it. We're donating proceeds to Doctors Without Borders - those docs are doing amazing work, and amazing doctors are a big part of what's needed there right now. This bake sale is gonna be HUGE - and with an insane raffle too. Srsly ppl, do not miss this event.

I'll also be stopping by this month's Vegan Drinks on Thursday the 28th, which will be featuring its own mini vegan bake sale for Haiti! (Like that event needed to get any awesomer.) They will be supporting Sodopreca, a group of veterinarians heading across the border from DR to help out.

Also this coming weekend are the big vegan bake sales in Chicago and Portland - I know those will be major. I'm excited to see that my home town ot New Orleans will be getting in on the Vegan Bake Sale action on February 6! Isa of the Post Punk Kitchen is doing an amazing job of keeping a comprehensive Vegan Bake Sales for Haiti list. Readers - If you're involved in any sales please leave a comment and give us all the details!

But guess what? Bake sales aren't it! There's also the amazing Josh Hooten and his partner Michelle of Herbivore Clothing Company: they teamed up with Ink Brigade to create this fab t-shirt. Naturally proceeds are going straight to the epicenter. Shirts have just begun to ship - I've already ordered mine... you're waiting for what, exactly?

So that's the news flash folks. Vegans are compassionate about animals - we're also compassionate about people! When you care, you care. And it's important to realize here that everyone can help. So you're not a doctor or nurse who can go volunteer; so you don't have "disposable" cash to donate. No matter. Pick up that wooden spoon and whip up those chocolate chip cookies! Can't bake? Then just go volunteer your time during the bake sale - it takes a good staff to run one successfully. No bake sales in your area? Organize one! Or get creative and see what else you can come up with. We can all do something, and at times of such desperate need we all should.

So do it people - shop on Etsy, eat a cupcake, and buy a t-shirt for Haiti!

How do you respond to a crisis? Vegans fundraise!
(Part One.)

As every reader undoubtedly knows, a few weeks ago the country of Haiti suffered severe damage in an earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale. Just over a week later, it endured an aftershock of 6.1. This was a severe blow for a country already enduring hardships barely imaginable to most of us, and its ramifications will be far reaching and long lasting. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, pretty much the whole world has jumped to action.

Being a person who had my own city partially destroyed in a semi-natural very-disaster not so many years ago, I have to say that sitting here watching this happen is really, really anxiety provoking. I have absolutely zero connection to Haiti, other than the facts that it's also populated by humans and cool animals and is on the planet earth. Nevertheless, the mere thought of the magnitude of human suffering that is happening there right now makes me start to freak out and cry a little bit. The only consolation I have for it is in focusing on what I can do, and that is to get involved in (and tell you about) all of the fabulous fundraising that is happening in the vegan community.

I am, frankly, just amazed at the outpouring of charity that has come from vegan contingents all over the world, beginning just a few days after the first quake. What are we doing?

Well for starters, many Etsy sellers have started to donate a portion of their sales to various relief organizations currently working in Haiti. I, for one, will be donating 50% of the sale price of any item in my my shop bright. until further notice. I'll be rotating monthly among a few worthwhile orgs including Doctors Without Borders, Partners in Health, and the World Society for the Protection of Animals.

Vegan Etsy Team member Panda With Cookie will be donating 100% of all profits from her clearance section to Doctors Without Borders, via a NYC bakesale that I'll be telling you about tomorrow. Vegancraftastic is donating 100% of sales of her knitting patterns to Doctors Without Borders through Ravelry knit and crochet community. And Sweet V Confections - yeah, that's right, think dessert - is donating 100% of chocolate fudge sales and 25% of all other sales to Doctors without borders! Mmmm, delicious compassion...

In addition, Vegancraftastic, Cards and Jewelry by Michele, and many (many many) other stellar Etsians have donated items to Hearts for Haiti, an Etsy shop which also donates 100% of all proceeds to Doctors Without Borders. At the time that I'm writing this, thanks to all the artisans who have donated items to sell, Hearts for Haiti has generated close to twenty thousand dollars!

As if that weren't enough, Michele and other VET members are also involved with another animal-friendly Etsy group, Etsy for Animals, which is having a Haiti Animal Relief Fundraiser. Various percentages of the sale price of Etsy items tagged with this moniker are donated to the World Society for the Protection of Animals,

So there you go. Want to help Haiti, but not sure what to do? Just do some shopping with the Vegan Etsy Team and you'll be on your way!
